Treat attribution as an engineering project with four dependent layers. Each one fails independently, and a break in an early layer invalidates everything downstream.

Layer 1: Server-Side Event Capture

Browser-based pixels are the weakest link in the chain. The identity layer is what turns three device signatures into one buyer. For most premium advertisers this does not require an enterprise identity graph. It requires a persistent first-party ID written at the first known interaction — newsletter signup, gated content download, inquiry form — and stitched to subsequent sessions through hashed email matching and authenticated states.

Where the volume and budget justify it, deterministic identity partners and clean-room matching extend that resolution to CTV and offline exposure. Expect realistic match rates in the 40–70% range for hashed email matching against household graphs, higher for brands with a real logged-in relationship. The number matters less than knowing it: an unmeasured match rate is an unquantified bias in every downstream report.

Layer 3: The CRM Closed Loop

This is the layer that separates attribution from lead counting, and it is the one most premium brands skip. The mechanic is straightforward: capture the click ID and first-party ID on the lead record at creation, carry them through the CRM as the deal advances, and push closed-won and closed-lost events back to the ad platforms with the actual deal value and timestamp.

The payoff is not incremental. It changes the answer. We routinely find that the channel producing the highest volume of leads is not the channel producing the highest volume of revenue — paid social and broad search generate inquiry volume with close rates in the low single digits, while premium CTV and PMP display generate fewer inquiries that close at three to five times the rate. Until closed-won data flows back, every optimization decision is being made on the wrong denominator.

Build notes that matter: allow for import latency, because a 120-day cycle means today's closed deal corresponds to media that ran four months ago; most platforms accept offline conversion imports with lookbacks of 90 days or less, so long-cycle brands should treat platform-side offline imports as an optimization signal and reserve full revenue attribution for their own warehouse.

Layer 4: Credit Assignment

Only now does model choice matter. The model is the last 10% of the build and the first 90% of most vendor conversations, which is exactly backwards.

Position-based is not the most sophisticated option; it is the most honest one at low volume, because its weights are transparent assumptions rather than a black box fitted to insufficient data.

Setting Windows for a Long Sales Cycle

Window settings do more damage than model choice, and they are usually left at defaults nobody chose.

  • Measure your actual cycle first. Pull the median and 80th percentile days from first known touch to closed-won across the last 24 months. Do not use the mean; one 400-day deal will distort it.
  • Set the lookback to the 80th percentile, not the median. If the median is 120 days and the 80th percentile is 210, a 90-day window is discarding the majority of qualifying paths.
  • Keep view-through separate from click-through. Do not blend CTV and display view-throughs into the same credit pool as clicks. Report them as a distinct line and validate them with holdouts.
  • Hold windows constant across periods. Changing the lookback mid-year makes every year-over-year comparison meaningless. Version your attribution config the way you would version code.

Attribution and Incrementality Are Not Competing Answers

The most common analytical error we see is treating attribution and incrementality as rival methods where one wins. They answer different questions. Attribution asks how should we divide credit among the touchpoints that appeared in converting paths — a correlational exercise on observed data, useful weekly, at the campaign and creative level. Incrementality asks what would have happened without this media — a causal exercise requiring a control group, useful quarterly, at the channel level.

The gap between them is the point. Published holdout studies across categories repeatedly find branded search and retargeting delivering 20–60% incremental lift against their reported conversions, while prospecting CTV and premium programmatic test at 70–95% incremental. Use incrementality to set the calibration factors in your attribution model, then use the calibrated model for the day-to-day decisions incrementality is too slow and too expensive to inform. That loop — quarterly causal test, continuous calibrated attribution — is what a defensible measurement program looks like.

Five Mistakes That Corrupt Premium Attribution

  1. Summing platform-reported conversions. Each platform claims every conversion it touched. Adding Meta's number to Google's to your DSP's typically overstates total conversions by 20–40%. Always deduplicate in a neutral warehouse.
  2. Optimizing to the form fill. With low volume and long cycles, optimizing toward raw lead count teaches the algorithm to find people who fill out forms, not people who buy. Optimize toward the deepest qualified event you can generate at sufficient volume — booked consultation, verified inquiry, attended tour.
  3. Ignoring lead quality by source. A $180 cost per lead from paid social closing at 2% is worse than a $600 cost per lead from premium CTV closing at 11%. Cost per lead is a diagnostic, never a verdict.
  4. Reading monthly. At 30 deals a quarter, a monthly attribution report is variance. Read rolling 90-day windows and medians.
  5. Never auditing the pipe. Match rates decay, tags break during site releases, CRM field mappings silently change. Attribution infrastructure needs a quarterly audit the same way a financial system needs a reconciliation.
